Merge, Split, Reorder or Delete PDF Pages: Which Tool?

To combine PDFs, use Merge PDF; to break one into several files, Split PDF; to change the page order, Reorder PDF Pages; to drop pages, Delete PDF Pages; to keep only some pages, Save Selected PDF Pages; and to turn sideways pages upright, Rotate PDF Pages. All six copy pages as they are, without re-rendering them, so text stays selectable and quality does not change. They run in your browser, so the documents stay on your device.

Which tool do I need for each page job?

  • Join several PDFs into one: Merge PDF.
  • Turn one PDF into several files: Split PDF.
  • Keep a handful of pages as a new file: Save Selected PDF Pages.
  • Remove some pages, including blank ones: Delete PDF Pages.
  • Change the order by dragging: Reorder PDF Pages, which can also rotate and delete.
  • Turn pages the right way up: Rotate PDF Pages.

A simple rule: if you already know the page numbers, type them (Split, Save Selected Pages). If you need to see the pages to decide, use a thumbnail tool (Delete, Reorder, Rotate).

How do I merge PDFs in a set order?

  1. Open Merge PDF and drop in two or more files. You can add more at any time; they join the end of the list.
  2. Drag files by their handle, or use the up and down arrows, so the first document is at the top.
  3. Click × next to any file you do not want.
  4. Click Merge into one PDF. The button only becomes active once at least two files are listed.
  5. merged.pdf downloads, and a message tells you how many pages it has.

Bookmarks and form fields from the source files are not carried over, and a file that needs a password to open must first be unlocked with Remove Password. Merge always takes whole files. To include only some pages of a file, save those pages first with Save Selected PDF Pages and merge the result.

For a double-sided document scanned as a "fronts" file and a "backs" file, use Interleave PDF Pages. It alternates the pages into reading order, which a plain merge cannot do.

How do I split a PDF into separate files?

  1. Open Split PDF and upload the file.
  2. Choose By ranges, Every N pages or Every page.
  3. For ranges, type groups separated by commas, such as 1-3, 4-10, 11-. Each group becomes its own file. 11- runs to the last page and -5 starts from page 1.
  4. For Every N pages, enter Pages per file. A 60-page bundle of two-page forms split with 2 gives 30 separate forms.
  5. Click Split PDF. A single group downloads as a PDF; several arrive in a ZIP, named with the part number and page range, for example report-part02-p4-10.pdf.

Ranges may overlap, so one page can appear in more than one output. There are also tools to split at a keyword (Split PDF at Keyword), by chapter bookmarks (Split PDF by Chapter) and by file size for upload limits (Split PDF to a Size Limit).

How do I keep only certain pages?

Open Save Selected PDF Pages and type what you want in Pages to keep: 2 for one page, 4-7 for a range, 10- for page 10 to the end, or a mix such as 1-3, 5, 8-. Click Extract Pages. The new file downloads with "-extracted" in its name, and your original is untouched.

Pages are always saved in ascending order and duplicates are ignored, so typing 5, 2 gives page 2 followed by page 5. To change the order, run the result through Reorder PDF Pages.

How do I delete pages, including blank ones?

  1. Open Delete PDF Pages. Thumbnails of every page load.
  2. Click a thumbnail to mark it for deletion; click again to unmark it. Marked pages fade out.
  3. For scans with blank backs, click Find blank pages to mark nearly empty pages, then look over what it picked.
  4. Click the Delete button, which shows how many pages will go. The file downloads with "-edited" in its name.

The blank-page check marks pages where almost nothing is darker than near-white, so faint scanner noise or a light watermark can stop a page being picked up. You cannot delete every page, because a PDF needs at least one.

For long documents, typing can be quicker than clicking. To remove pages 3 and 40 to 45 from a 120-page file, open Save Selected PDF Pages and keep 1-2, 4-39, 46-.

Deleting is not the same as redacting. If only part of a page is sensitive, use Redact PDF rather than removing the whole page.

How do I reorder or rotate pages?

Reorder PDF Pages shows every page as a thumbnail labelled with its original page number:

  • Drag a thumbnail to its new position.
  • Use the buttons under each page to rotate it left or right, or delete it.
  • Rotate all left, Rotate all right and Reverse order act on every page. Reverse order fixes a stack the scanner saved last page first.
  • Click Save Organized PDF. The file downloads with "-organized" in its name.

Rotate PDF Pages is the same grid without dragging or deleting, for when orientation is the only problem. Turn single pages or all of them, then click Rotate PDF; the file saves with "-rotated" in its name. Rotation is stored in each page's settings, so it shows correctly in every reader and nothing is re-rendered. Only 90° steps are possible, which is a limit of the PDF format itself.

Dragging thumbnails works best with a mouse or trackpad. On a phone, the rotate and delete buttons work, but drag-and-drop reordering may not.

In what order should I do several jobs?

A typical clean-up of an application pack:

  1. Merge the covering letter, the form and the certificates.
  2. Reorder and rotate in one pass on the merged file.
  3. Delete blanks and duplicates.
  4. Compress last with Compress PDF if there is a size limit, because the page tools copy pages without shrinking them.

Compressing last means you compress once, from the final set of pages.

Common mistakes

  • Merging when you meant to interleave. Fronts-then-backs scans need Interleave PDF Pages.
  • Expecting Save Selected Pages to reorder. It always keeps ascending order.
  • Deleting a page to hide one line. Redact instead.
  • Rotating only in your PDF reader. The view resets next time you open it; Rotate PDF Pages saves the change into the file.
  • Expecting a big size drop from deleting pages. Removing pages usually shrinks a file, but fonts and images shared with the remaining pages stay.

Quick answers

How do I merge PDF files in a specific order?

Add the files to EasyConvert's Merge PDF, drag them into the order you want with the first file at the top, and click Merge into one PDF. The result downloads as merged.pdf.

How do I split a PDF into single pages?

Open Split PDF, choose Every page and click Split PDF. You get a ZIP containing one PDF per page, with the page number in each file name.

How do I remove blank pages from a scanned PDF?

Open Delete PDF Pages, click Find blank pages to mark nearly empty pages, check the marked thumbnails and click Delete. Faint marks can stop a page being detected, so review the selection first.

Does merging or splitting a PDF reduce quality?

No. EasyConvert's merge, split, reorder, delete, extract and rotate tools copy pages without re-rendering them, so text stays selectable and images keep their resolution.

Can I rotate a PDF page by 45 degrees?

No. PDF pages can only be rotated in 90-degree steps. Rotate PDF Pages turns single pages or the whole document by 90 or 180 degrees and saves the change permanently.
