Add sales tax to a price, or work backwards from a receipt total to the price before tax (reverse sales tax), at any rate you type. In the US the rate is the state rate plus any county, city and special-district rates for the delivery address, so enter that combined rate.
The result shows the price before tax, the tax and the total, and the multiplier to use in a spreadsheet.
Step by step
- Enter the rate: Type the combined sales tax rate, for example 8.875 for New York City.
- Enter the amount: Type the price, or the total from a receipt.
- Add or take out: Choose before tax to add it, or including tax to take it out.
Good to know
To reverse sales tax, divide the total by 1 + the rate: $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.

Questions
Why doesn’t it look up my ZIP code?
Local rates change often and depend on the exact address, so this calculator does the arithmetic with the rate you enter. Your state revenue department publishes a rate lookup.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser on your own device; nothing is uploaded or stored, and the page keeps working offline once it has loaded.
