IBAN Validator — Check and Format Any IBAN

Check an IBAN's length, country format and mod-97 check digits, see the bank and account parts, and copy it in print or electronic format.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Check an IBAN before you send money: the country code, the exact length for that country, and the ISO 13616 mod-97 check digits that catch nearly every typo or swapped pair of characters. For Belgium, Czechia, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Portugal and Spain it also checks the national check digits inside the account number.

Paste one IBAN or a whole list (one per line). Valid IBANs are split into bank code, branch and account number where the country’s layout is fixed, and can be copied in the spaced print format or the compact electronic format.

Step by step

  1. Paste the IBAN: Type or paste it with or without spaces. Several IBANs can go on separate lines.
  2. Read the result: Each line says whether the IBAN is valid, and if not, what is wrong — wrong length, wrong check digits (with the digits it should have), or a bad national check.
  3. Copy it: Copy the IBAN in groups of four for printing, or without spaces for online banking.

Handy for

Before paying an invoice

Catch a mistyped IBAN before the transfer bounces or, worse, reaches someone else.

Checking a list

Validate a column of supplier or employee IBANs pasted from a spreadsheet.

Developers and testers

Confirm test data and see how each country structures its BBAN.

Good to know

  • A valid IBAN proves the number is well formed, not that the account exists or who owns it. Many banks also check the payee name before a transfer.

  • Making a payment QR code? The EPC QR Code Generator checks the IBAN as you type.

Questions

How does the IBAN check work?

The first four characters are moved to the end, letters become numbers (A = 10 … Z = 35), and the whole number must leave a remainder of 1 when divided by 97. That catches all single-character mistakes and almost all swaps.

Why does it say the national check digits are wrong?

Some countries put their own check digits inside the account number. If the IBAN check passes but the national one fails, the IBAN was probably generated from an account number that was already mistyped.

Which countries are covered?

Lengths for every country in the SWIFT IBAN Registry are built in; the bank and account split is shown for the main European countries.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser on your own device; nothing is uploaded or stored, and the page keeps working offline once it has loaded.
