Japan’s 16 national holidays (国民の祝日) for any year, with substitute holidays (振替休日), citizens’ holidays and equinox days, week numbers and a PDF calendar.
Golden Week (29 April–5 May) and Silver Week in September are the busiest stretches: when Respect for the Aged Day and the Autumnal Equinox are two days apart, the day between becomes a citizens’ holiday, as on 22 September 2026. A holiday on a Sunday moves to the next day that isn’t a holiday. The 2019–2021 dates follow the enthronement and the Tokyo Olympics changes.
Holidays per year, with how many fall on a weekday — 2026: Japan 16 (17 on weekdays) · 2027: Japan 16 (16 on weekdays).
Step by step
- Pick the year: Use the arrows or type any year from 1990 to 2100; the list for Japan updates as you type.
- Read the list: Each row shows the date, weekday, ISO week, the English and local name, and tags for substitute days or days that aren’t a general day off.
- Print the calendar: Choose the whole year on one page or a month per page, A4 or Letter, and weeks starting Sunday or Monday, then click Download PDF calendar.
- Add it to your calendar: Calendar file (.ics) imports the holidays as all-day events into Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar; Spreadsheet (.csv) opens in Excel or Numbers.

Good to know
Japan has 16 national holidays. A holiday on a Sunday gives a substitute holiday (振替休日) on the next day that is not a holiday, and a single day between two holidays becomes a citizens’ holiday (国民の休日).
The equinox days are announced each February for the following year; dates here use the standard astronomical formula. Banks and most offices also close 31 December–3 January, which is not a national holiday and not counted.
Count the days between two dates, minus these holidays, with the Japan working days calculator.

Questions
How are the equinox days set?
The Cabinet Office announces them each February for the following year, from the National Astronomical Observatory’s calculations. This calendar uses the standard formula, which gives the announced dates for current years.
What is a citizens’ holiday (国民の休日)?
A single ordinary day between two national holidays becomes a holiday too. Today it happens in some Septembers (2026, 2032, 2037); before 2007 it made 4 May a holiday every year.
How far ahead and back does the Japan calendar go?
Any year from 1990 to 2100, worked out from the holiday rules — fixed dates, Easter, nth weekdays and the substitution rules — with known one-off holidays and start and end years applied. Dates a government proclaims each year can change, so check official sources for future years.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The holiday rules and every calculation run in your browser, and the PDF, calendar file and CSV are made on your device. Nothing you type — dates, extra days off — leaves it.
