Passport Photo Checker — Size, Head Position & Background

Check a passport or visa photo on your device: pixel size, head height and position, tilt, background evenness and brightness, against your country's rules.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Check a passport or visa photo before you submit it: the photo’s shape and pixel size, the head height from chin to top of head, the eye height where it’s specified, whether the face is centred, level and facing the camera, and whether the background is plain and the right colour — for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, China and the 35×45 mm rules most of the world uses.

The face is found automatically on your device and the head lines can be dragged into place, so the measurements stay accurate even with big hair or a beard.

Step by step

  1. Choose the rules: Pick the country or document; its head-size and background rules are shown with a link to the official page.
  2. Add the photo: Drop the photo you plan to use — already cropped to the final shape.
  3. Adjust the lines: If the dashed lines aren’t on the top of the head and the bottom of the chin, drag them (or select one and use the arrow keys). The green band shows where the top of the head should be.
  4. Fix what fails: Each check says what is wrong and how to fix it; crop or resize in the Passport Photo Maker and check again.

Handy for

Online renewals

Make sure a phone photo has enough pixels and the right framing before uploading it to a government site.

Prints from a shop

Check a scanned or digital copy of shop-made photos for head size before an appointment.

Visa applications

Check Schengen, Chinese or US visa photos against their own size rules.

Good to know

  • Most rejections are for head size, shadows on the background and tilted heads — the first three things this checks.

  • Glasses: most countries now ask you to take them off for the photo.

  • Use a photo taken in the last six months.

Questions

Does a pass here mean the photo will be accepted?

No. It means the measurable parts look right. Officials also judge expression, glare, shadows on the face, and how recent and natural the photo is, and rules can change — always read the official guidance linked on the page.

How accurate is the head measurement?

The first estimate comes from the face keypoints and the background. Because hair and chins vary, drag the lines to the exact top of the head and bottom of the chin; the measurement in millimetres is then exact for the photo’s size.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is opened and measured in this browser tab. The face-detection model is downloaded once and then runs on your device; the picture itself never leaves it.
