Great Prayer Day (Store Bededag), the fourth Friday after Easter, was abolished from 2024 to help pay for defence, leaving ten holidays, most of them tied to Easter. Constitution Day (5 June) and the Christmas and New Year eves are not public holidays, but many workplaces close for part or all of the day.

Good to know
Denmark has 10 public holidays (helligdage) from 2024, when Great Prayer Day (Store Bededag) was abolished. Holidays on a weekend are not moved.
Constitution Day (5 June) is not an official public holiday; many workplaces give the day or the afternoon off. It is listed but not counted as a day off. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are customary days off for many.

Why did Denmark abolish Store Bededag?
Parliament abolished it in 2023, with effect from 2024, to fund higher defence spending. Employees were compensated with a small pay rise instead of the day off.
