Compress Video Online — Reduce MP4 File Size

Reduce video file size with quality presets or an exact target size in MB, without uploading the file.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Make a video smaller for email, WhatsApp, Discord or an upload form. Choose Light, Balanced or Strong compression, or set an exact Target size in MB, and optionally lower the resolution. The result is an MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio) that plays everywhere.

The tool never raises the bitrate above the original's, and it tells you honestly if the file couldn't be made any smaller.

Step by step

  1. Add your video: Drop the file onto the upload area. Its size and current bitrate are shown below the options.
  2. Choose how much to compress: Pick Light, Balanced or Strong — or Target size and type the number of MB you need.
  3. Lower the resolution if needed: Under Max resolution, choose 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p. Fewer pixels is the most effective way to shrink a file.
  4. Keep or drop the sound: Untick Keep audio if the video doesn't need sound — it saves a little more space.
  5. Compress: Click Compress Video. When it finishes you'll see the before and after sizes and a preview.

Handy for

Email attachments

Get a video under a 25 MB attachment limit with Target size.

Chat apps

Shrink clips before sending them in messaging apps with size caps.

Upload forms

Meet the file-size limit of a job portal, school or government form.

Saving space

Reduce large phone recordings before archiving them.

Good to know

  • For big reductions, combine Strong compression with a lower resolution such as 720p.

  • Target size works best for videos longer than a few seconds — very short clips have a fixed container overhead.

  • Screen recordings with large flat areas compress extremely well.

Questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is read, decoded and re-encoded inside your browser using its built-in WebCodecs encoders. Nothing is sent to a server, so private recordings stay on your device.

How accurate is Target size?

The bitrate is calculated from the video's length, leaving room for audio and the container, so the file usually lands just under the target. Very short or very simple videos can come out smaller than requested.

Why isn't my video any smaller?

If the original is already efficiently compressed, re-encoding can't shrink it much. Try Strong, or a lower resolution — the tool tells you when the result isn't smaller.

Which file types can I use?

MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV and MPEG-TS videos. Older formats such as AVI, WMV and FLV can't be read in the browser — you'll see a clear message if you try one.

Which browsers work?

Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari (17 or newer) work best. Firefox can read most files but may lack some encoders, such as H.264 — if a format isn't available, the tool says so before you start. Phones work too, but long or 4K videos can run out of memory.
