Video to GIF Converter — Make GIFs from MP4, MOV, WebM

Turn a short part of any video into an animated GIF, choosing frame rate, width and colours. Free, no sign-up, and your files never leave your device.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Turn a short part of a video into an animated GIF. Pick the section with the range bar, then choose the frame rate, width and number of colours. Each frame gets its own colour palette for the best quality a GIF allows.

GIFs are large compared with video — keep clips short and the width modest. If the app you're sharing to accepts video, an MP4 will be much smaller.

Step by step

  1. Add a video: Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file. The first six seconds are selected to start with.
  2. Choose the section: Drag the handles or use Set start to playhead and Set end to playhead.
  3. Set the look: Pick a Frame rate (5–25 fps), a Width (240–800 px) and Colours (256 for best quality, fewer for a smaller file).
  4. Looping: Leave Loop forever ticked for a classic repeating GIF.
  5. Create: Click Create GIF. The GIF downloads and plays in a preview.

Good to know

  • 10–12 fps at 480 px wide is a good balance of smoothness and size.

  • Cutting colours to 64 shrinks most GIFs noticeably with little visible loss on simple footage.

Questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is read, decoded and re-encoded inside your browser using its built-in WebCodecs encoders. Nothing is sent to a server, so private recordings stay on your device.

Why is my GIF so big?

GIF stores every frame with only 256 colours and simple compression. Shorten the clip, lower the frame rate or width, or reduce the colours.

Which file types can I use?

MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV and MPEG-TS videos. Older formats such as AVI, WMV and FLV can't be read in the browser — you'll see a clear message if you try one.

Which browsers work?

Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari (17 or newer) work best. Firefox can read most files but may lack some encoders, such as H.264 — if a format isn't available, the tool says so before you start. Phones work too, but long or 4K videos can run out of memory.
