ZUGFeRD & Factur-X Viewer — See the XML Inside the PDF

A ZUGFeRD or Factur-X invoice looks like an ordinary PDF but carries a machine-readable copy of the invoice as an attached XML file.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

A ZUGFeRD or Factur-X invoice looks like an ordinary PDF but carries a machine-readable copy of the invoice as an attached XML file. This viewer takes that XML out of the PDF — factur-x.xml, zugferd-invoice.xml, ZUGFeRD-invoice.xml or xrechnung.xml — and lays it out as a document, so you can check that the data says the same as the pages. Show PDF pages puts the PDF itself next to it.

Factur-X (France) and ZUGFeRD (Germany) have been one format since ZUGFeRD 2.1. All profiles open: MINIMUM and BASIC WL (totals only), BASIC, EN 16931 (COMFORT), EXTENDED and XRECHNUNG, plus older ZUGFeRD 1.0 files. You can also drop the XML on its own.

Step by step

  1. Add the PDF: Drop the invoice PDF on the box. The viewer looks through its attachments for the invoice XML; nothing is uploaded.
  2. See the profile: The line above the invoice number names the syntax and profile, for example “Factur-X / ZUGFeRD EN 16931 (COMFORT)”.
  3. Compare with the pages: Click Show PDF pages and compare the amounts, IBAN and dates with the data shown here.
  4. Keep what you need: Show XML → Save the XML extracts the embedded file; Download as PDF makes a clean readable copy of the data.

Handy for

Checking before payment

Make sure the bank details in the data match the ones printed on the PDF.

Extracting the XML

Get the factur-x.xml out of a hybrid PDF to import or archive it separately.

French e-invoicing reform

From 1 September 2026 all businesses in France must be able to receive e-invoices, and large and mid-sized companies must issue them; Factur-X is one of the accepted formats.

Good to know

  • MINIMUM and BASIC WL profiles carry no line items — only the totals. With those, the PDF pages are the full invoice.

  • If the data and the pages disagree, ask the seller for a corrected invoice rather than picking one yourself.

  • Encrypted PDFs can’t be read without their password, so their XML can’t be shown here.

Questions

It says the PDF has no embedded invoice XML.

Then it's an ordinary PDF invoice rather than ZUGFeRD or Factur-X — or the XML was lost, for example when the PDF was printed to a new PDF or "optimised" by another program. Ask the sender for the original file.

Is Factur-X the same as ZUGFeRD?

Since ZUGFeRD 2.1 they are technically the same: a PDF/A-3 file with a UN/CEFACT CII invoice attached. ZUGFeRD also has an XRECHNUNG profile; ZUGFeRD 1.0 used an older XML structure, which this viewer still reads.

Which profile is my file?

It's shown above the invoice number, taken from the guideline ID inside the XML.

Does it validate the invoice?

No. The quick checks only add up the figures in the file (quantity × price, the line total, VAT per rate, the grand total and amount due) and point out differences. They are not a formal EN 16931 or Schematron validation and don't check business rules, code lists or the schema — use your software's or the official validator for that.

Is my invoice uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and laid out by your browser on your own device — nothing is sent to a server, and the PDF copy is made on your device too. That matters for invoices, which carry bank details, prices and customer names.
