Open an XRechnung and see it as a readable invoice: seller and buyer, the Leitweg-ID, order and contract numbers, line items, the VAT breakdown, totals and bank details. Both XRechnung syntaxes work, UBL (Invoice and CreditNote) and UN/CEFACT CII (CrossIndustryInvoice), and the file never leaves your device.

XRechnung is the German specification of the European e-invoice standard EN 16931, used above all for invoices to public authorities. Since 1 January 2025 every business in Germany must also be able to receive e-invoices from other businesses, so XRechnung files now turn up in ordinary inboxes. ZUGFeRD, Factur-X, Peppol and FatturaPA files open on this page too.

Step by step

  1. Add the XRechnung: Drop the .xml file on the box. UBL or CII is detected automatically; an XRechnung embedded in a ZUGFeRD PDF works as well.
  2. Check the references: The Buyer reference (Leitweg-ID) and the purchase order and contract numbers are listed under References — those are what public buyers match invoices against.
  3. Go through lines and totals: Units are shown as words (HUR → hour, C62 → unit), the VAT breakdown by category and rate, then the totals down to the amount due.
  4. Save a copy: Click Download as PDF for a readable copy, or Print. Show XML shows the original data.

Good to know

  • A Leitweg-ID looks like 991-12345-67: a coarse routing part, an optional fine part and a check number. The viewer shows it exactly as written in the file.

  • In Germany, ZUGFeRD files from version 2.0.1 count as e-invoices too, except the MINIMUM and BASIC WL profiles, which carry only totals.

  • The quick checks only add up figures; they don’t run the official XRechnung rules. A clean result here doesn’t mean a portal will accept the file.

Questions

What is a Leitweg-ID?

The routing ID of a German public-sector recipient. It goes in the invoice's Buyer reference field (BT-10) and often also as the buyer's electronic address with scheme 0204. The viewer shows it under References and in the buyer's details.

UBL or CII — does it matter?

XRechnung allows both syntaxes and they carry the same information. The viewer reads both and lays them out the same way.

Can I open an XRechnung credit note?

Yes. UBL CreditNote files and CII files with a credit-note type code (381) are shown as credit notes, with the referenced original invoice under References.

Does it validate the invoice?

No. The quick checks only add up the figures in the file (quantity × price, the line total, VAT per rate, the grand total and amount due) and point out differences. They are not a formal EN 16931 or Schematron validation and don't check business rules, code lists or the schema — use your software's or the official validator for that.

Is my invoice uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and laid out by your browser on your own device — nothing is sent to a server, and the PDF copy is made on your device too. That matters for invoices, which carry bank details, prices and customer names.
