Add Canadian sales tax to a price, or take it out of a tax-included total, for every province and territory: 5% GST everywhere, HST of 13% in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and GST plus a provincial tax in British Columbia (7% PST), Manitoba (7% RST), Saskatchewan (6% PST) and Quebec (9.975% QST).
The result splits the tax into its federal and provincial parts, the way they appear on a receipt.
Step by step
- Pick the province: Choose where the sale takes place — normally where the goods are delivered.
- Enter the amount: Type the price before tax, or the total including tax.
- Add or take out: Choose whether the amount is before or including tax.
- Read the split: GST and PST/QST, or the single HST, are shown separately with the total.
Good to know
Quebec’s QST is calculated on the price before GST, so the combined rate is 14.975%.
In Ontario a $100 item costs $113.00 with HST.
Nova Scotia’s HST fell from 15% to 14% on 1 April 2025. PST in BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan has exemptions and is not charged on every GST item.
Questions
How do I take HST out of a total?
Divide by 1 plus the rate: in Ontario, $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, so the HST is $13.
Which provinces have HST?
Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia (14%), New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island (15%). Alberta and the three territories charge only the 5% GST.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
