Allow Printing and Copying in a Restricted PDF

Lift print, copy and edit restrictions from a PDF you're allowed to change, keeping its text and quality.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Some PDFs open without a password but stop you printing, copying text or editing. Unlock PDF removes those restrictions and saves a clean, unprotected copy. Text, links and quality are preserved — pages are not turned into images.

If the file needs a password just to open it, you'll be asked for it; that case is covered in detail by Drop Password.

Step by step

  1. Upload the PDF: If it opens without a password, it loads straight away.
  2. Enter a password if asked: Files that need a password to open show a password box.
  3. Unlock: Click Unlock PDF. The copy downloads with "-unlocked" in its name.
  4. Check it: Try printing or copying text in your PDF reader.

Handy for

Printing your own documents

Print statements or tickets that were exported with printing disabled.

Quoting

Copy text from a report you're allowed to quote.

Merging and editing

Restrictions can block other tools; unlock first.

Accessibility

Let assistive tools read a restricted document.

Good to know

  • Only unlock documents you own or have permission to change.

  • The file itself is kept — bookmarks, form fields, links and attachments all stay; only the encryption is removed.

  • If the PDF isn't protected, you'll be told there is nothing to remove.

Questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and processed by JavaScript running in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and the result is created on your device.

How can restrictions be removed without the owner password?

Restriction-only PDFs are encrypted with an empty "open" password; the restrictions are rules readers are asked to respect. Once opened, the content can be saved without them.

Is the text still selectable?

Yes. The document is decrypted and saved without encryption; its pages are not re-rendered.

Is this legal?

Removing restrictions from your own documents is generally fine. Respect copyright and the terms under which you received a file.
