SHA-256 and Other Hashes for Any File

Compute SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and SHA-1 hashes of a file and compare them against a hash you paste.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Calculate cryptographic fingerprints (hashes) of a file: SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 and SHA-1. If even one byte of the file changes, the fingerprint changes completely — so comparing hashes proves whether two copies are identical. Paste a known hash to compare automatically.

Step by step

  1. Upload a file: Any file works, not just PDFs.
  2. Generate: Click Generate Fingerprint.
  3. Copy a hash: Click any hash to copy it.
  4. Compare: Paste a hash into Compare with a known hash to see a match or mismatch instantly.

Handy for

Proving a document is unchanged

Record the SHA-256 of a signed contract and check it later.

Verifying downloads

Compare against a hash published by the sender.

Evidence handling

Note the fingerprint of files you hand over.

De-duplication

Find out whether two files with different names are actually identical.

Good to know

  • SHA-256 is the usual choice to publish or record.

  • SHA-1 is included for checking against older records; don't rely on it for new security purposes.

  • Comparison ignores upper and lower case and surrounding spaces.

Questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and processed by JavaScript running in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and the result is created on your device.

Is MD5 available?

No. Browsers' built-in cryptography doesn't provide MD5, and it's no longer considered secure.

Will re-saving a PDF change its fingerprint?

Yes, almost always — even if it looks identical, saving rewrites internal data.

Is the hash computed on the full file?

Yes, on every byte of the file you uploaded.

More Protect & Redact tools

  • Add a Password to a PDF — Require a password to open a PDF using AES-256 or AES-128, and optionally restrict printing or copying.
  • Remove a Known PDF Password — Enter the password you know and save a copy of the PDF that opens without one, with text and links kept.
  • Allow Printing & Copying in a PDF — Lift print, copy and edit restrictions from a PDF you're allowed to change, keeping its text and quality.
  • Find & Redact Personal Data — Find emails, phones, PAN, Aadhaar, cards, IFSC, GSTIN and IBAN in a PDF, review each match, and redact it.
  • Test a PDF for Leaky Redactions — Test whether text under black boxes or hidden on blank areas is still readable, and make a properly redacted copy.
  • Check a PDF for Hidden Data — List a PDF's metadata, form data, attachments and scripts, and find emails, phones, PAN, Aadhaar or card numbers.
