Night-Mode, Greyscale and Sepia Versions of a PDF

Apply invert, dark mode, greyscale or sepia as a blend layer over each page, keeping text sharp and selectable.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Turn a bright white PDF into something easier on the eyes at night, or remove colour for printing. Choose Invert, Dark mode, Greyscale or Sepia.

The colour change is applied as a blend layer on top of each page, so the page content itself is untouched: text stays sharp and selectable, and the file barely grows in size.

Step by step

  1. Upload the PDF: All pages are converted.
  2. Choose a style: Invert gives white text on black, Dark mode a softer dark grey, Greyscale removes colour, Sepia gives a warm paper tone.
  3. Convert: Click Convert Colours.
  4. Read: Open the downloaded file in your usual reader or on a tablet.

Handy for

Night reading

Read long documents in a dark room without a glaring white page.

Light sensitivity

Some readers find light text on a dark background more comfortable.

Greyscale printing

Preview how a colour document will look on a black-and-white printer.

Presentations

Show documents on a projector in a dark room.

Good to know

  • Inverting also inverts photos, which will look like negatives. Greyscale or Sepia keep photos natural.

  • Don't print inverted pages — the dark background uses a lot of ink.

  • Because the original is unchanged underneath, you can always go back to the source file.

Questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and processed by JavaScript running in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and the result is created on your device.

Is the text still selectable and searchable?

Yes. The colours change via a blend layer; the text is still real text.

Will it look the same in every reader?

It uses standard PDF blend modes supported by mainstream readers such as browsers, Acrobat and Preview. Very old or minimal viewers may ignore them.

Does it make the file bigger?

Only by a few bytes per page.
