Number PDF Pages in the Position and Style You Want

Number pages in one of six positions and four formats, from any starting number, optionally skipping the cover.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Number every page of a PDF in one of six positions and four formats — "1", "Page 1", "1 / 10" or "Page 1 of 10". You can start from any number and skip the cover page, so the first content page can be page 1.

Step by step

  1. Upload the PDF: Numbers are added to all pages (except the first, if you choose to skip it).
  2. Choose a position: Top or bottom; left, centre or right.
  3. Choose a format: Pick one of the four formats shown.
  4. Set the details: Start at sets the first number; Font size controls the size; tick Skip the first page (cover) to leave the cover unnumbered.
  5. Apply: Click Add Page Numbers. The file downloads with "-numbered" in its name.

Handy for

Merged documents

Give a bundle made with Merge PDF one continuous numbering.

Printed handouts

Help readers put loose pages back in order.

Theses and reports

Start numbering after a title page.

Continuing a series

Start at 51 when this file follows a 50-page volume.

Good to know

  • When the cover is skipped, the second page gets your start number and the total counts only numbered pages.

  • Numbers sit about 1 cm in from the edge, inside most printers' margins.

  • For legal-style identifiers with a prefix, use Bates Numbering.

  • For extra text like a title or date beside the number, use Header & Footer.

Questions

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and processed by JavaScript running in your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and the result is created on your device.

Can I use Roman numerals?

Not at the moment; numbers are Arabic numerals.

Will numbers overlap existing content?

They are placed near the edge where margins usually are. If a document has content right at the edge, choose another position.

Is the original content changed?

Only the numbers are added on top; everything else stays as it was.

More Edit, Sign & Stamp tools

  • Header & Footer on Every Page — Put text in up to six header and footer slots, with placeholders for page number, page count, date and file name.
  • Redact Text in a PDF — Search for words or drag boxes over areas, then remove that content from the file rather than just covering it.
  • Flatten Forms & Annotations — Turn form fields and annotations into fixed page content so filled answers and markup can no longer be changed.
  • Change PDF Title, Author & Keywords — View and change a PDF's title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer fields.
  • Bates Stamp PDF Pages — Stamp a prefix and zero-padded running number such as ABC000001 on every page, with a preview first.
  • Thumb Impression Maker — Turn a photo of an inked thumb impression into a clean transparent PNG, and optionally stamp it onto a PDF.
