Password Strength Checker — How Strong Is My Password?

Estimate how long a password would take to crack and get specific advice — checked privately on your device.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Check how quickly a password could be cracked, using the open-source zxcvbn estimator that recognises common passwords, names, keyboard runs, dates, repeats and l33t swaps. You get a 0–4 score, crack-time estimates for four attack scenarios, and specific advice. Everything happens on your device — the password is never sent or stored.

Step by step

  1. Enter a password: Type or paste it into Password to check; use the eye button to show or hide it.
  2. Add personal words (optional): List your name, pet, city or email under Personal words to watch for — passwords using them score lower.
  3. Read the result: See the score, any warning, suggestions and estimated crack times.
  4. Improve it: Follow the advice, or create a new one with the Password Generator.

Handy for

Checking an existing password

Teaching password safety

Choosing a passphrase

See how several random words compare with short complex passwords.

Good to know

  • Length beats complexity: four or five random words are stronger and easier to remember than short symbol-heavy passwords.

  • Never reuse a password across sites — a password manager makes that easy.

  • Turn on two-factor authentication for important accounts.

Questions

Is it safe to type my real password here?

The check runs entirely in your browser with no network requests, nothing is stored, and the field has autocomplete turned off. Still, if you’re unsure, test a similar password instead.

Does it check data breaches?

It flags passwords from its built-in list of common passwords, but it doesn’t look your password up online — that would mean sending data off your device.

Why do the crack times differ so much?

Attackers guessing through a website are slow (rate-limited); attackers with a stolen database can try billions per second if the site used a fast hash.
