Hash Generator — MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512 and HMAC

Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes or HMACs of text and files. Free, no sign-up, and your files never leave your device.

Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Calculate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of text or any file at once, or switch to HMAC with a secret key. Paste an expected checksum to confirm a download is intact — a ✓ appears next to the matching algorithm.

Step by step

  1. Choose Text or File: Text is hashed as UTF-8 as you type; files are read locally.
  2. Choose the format: lowercase hex, HEX or Base64.
  3. Optional: HMAC: Tick HMAC with a secret key and enter the key.
  4. Compare: Paste a published checksum into Compare with an expected hash.

Handy for

Verifying downloads

Check an ISO or installer against its published SHA-256.

Webhooks

Compute an HMAC signature to compare with a webhook header.

Deduplication

Find identical files by their hash.

Development

Generate test hashes for code.

Good to know

  • MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums but must not be used for passwords or signatures.

  • Store passwords with a slow hash like bcrypt or Argon2, never plain SHA-256.

Questions

Do two different files ever have the same hash?

For SHA-256 this is practically impossible. For MD5 and SHA-1, deliberate collisions are possible, so don't rely on them against tampering.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Everything is processed by JavaScript in your browser tab — nothing you paste or open is uploaded, logged or stored on a server. You can even use the tool offline once the page has loaded.
