Citation Generator — APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard and IEEE
Format references and in-text citations in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 17, Harvard or IEEE style and build a bibliography.
Free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
Create correctly formatted references and in-text citations for books, journal articles, web pages and reports in APA 7th, MLA 9th, Chicago 17th, Harvard or IEEE style, with italics where the style needs them. Save references into a bibliography that is sorted (or numbered for IEEE) automatically.
Step by step
- Choose style and source: Pick the Citation style and the Source type.
- Add authors: Enter first, middle and last names (+ Add author for more), or tick The author is an organisation.
- Fill in the details: Title, then the fields for that source — journal, volume, issue, pages, DOI, publisher, URL, dates.
- Copy or save: Use Copy (with italics) to paste into Word or Google Docs, or + Add to bibliography to build your list, then Copy all or Download .txt.
Handy for
Assignments and theses
Build the reference list as you read.
Switching styles
Change the style and the whole bibliography reformats.
Engineering papers
Numbered IEEE references in citation order.
In-text citations
Get (Author, Year), (Author page) or [n] forms to match.
Good to know
APA, Harvard and IEEE use sentence case for titles. The converter can’t recognise proper nouns, so it’s off by default — tick it, then re-capitalise names and places.
Enter just the DOI number (10.xxxx/…); it is turned into a https://doi.org/ link.
Nothing is looked up online — you type the details, so check them against the source.
Questions
Which Harvard style is this?
The widely used “Cite Them Right” form. Harvard has many local variants, so compare with your university’s guide.
How are many authors handled?
Each style’s rule: APA lists up to 20, MLA uses “et al.” from three, Chicago lists up to ten, Harvard uses “et al.” from four and IEEE from seven.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and anything you save (decks, timetables, results) stays in this browser’s local storage on your device.
