CGPA to Percentage, SGPA and the 75% Attendance Rule

To convert CGPA to percentage, open the CGPA to Percentage calculator, enter your CGPA out of 10 and pick the formula your board or university uses. The options are CBSE's CGPA × 9.5, the VTU formula (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, or a custom multiplier and offset. A CGPA of 8.6 is 81.70% by the CBSE rule but 78.50% by the VTU formula, so always use the formula on your marksheet or in your university's regulations.

This guide also covers how SGPA and CGPA are worked out, and how many classes you can miss while keeping 75% attendance.

Which CGPA to percentage formula should I use?

The calculator offers three formulas:

  • CBSE: percentage = CGPA × 9.5. CBSE published this as an indicative factor for its Class X and XII grade points.
  • VTU: percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
  • Custom: percentage = (CGPA − offset) × multiplier, for any university that publishes its own rule. If yours simply multiplies by 10, set the multiplier to 10 and the offset to 0.

Here is the same CGPA under the two built-in rules:

  • 7.2 CGPA: 68.40% (CBSE), 64.50% (VTU)
  • 8.6 CGPA: 81.70% (CBSE), 78.50% (VTU)
  • 9.1 CGPA: 86.45% (CBSE), 83.50% (VTU)

It also works backwards. Choose Percentage → CGPA and 81.7% becomes 8.60 on the CBSE rule. To meet a 60% cut-off you need 6.32 CGPA on the CBSE rule but 6.75 on the VTU formula.

Why do universities convert CGPA differently?

CGPA is a weighted average of grade points, and every institution maps marks to grade points in its own way. One university may award an A for 80–89 marks, another for 75–84, and some use relative grading. A single multiplier can only approximate how those grade points relate to raw marks. That's why the formulas differ and why none of them is "the" correct one. When a form asks for a percentage, use your institution's published formula. If there isn't one, give the CGPA and say which formula you used.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage step by step?

  1. Choose CGPA → Percentage (or Percentage → CGPA).
  2. Enter CGPA (out of 10), or your percentage.
  3. Pick the Formula: CBSE, VTU or Custom.
  4. For Custom, enter the Multiplier and Offset from your university's rules.
  5. Read the result alongside Formula used, which you can quote on an application.

How are SGPA and CGPA calculated?

The GPA Calculator, in India SGPA / CGPA (10-point) mode, uses the UGC 10-point scale: O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4 and F = 0.

SGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits. Its built-in example has Mathematics at A+ (4 credits), Physics at A (3 credits) and a Lab at O (2 credits): (4 × 9 + 3 × 8 + 2 × 10) ÷ 9 = 80 ÷ 9 = 8.89.

CGPA weights each semester's SGPA by its credits. A semester of 8.2 over 22 credits and one of 8.6 over 24 credits give (180.4 + 206.4) ÷ 46 = 8.41, not the simple average of 8.40. If your university averages SGPAs without credits, give every semester the same credits. Press Add this semester's SGPA to carry the current semester into the CGPA list. Your rows are saved in your browser for next semester.

The same tool has a US GPA (4.0 scale) mode: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on, with Honors +0.5 and AP/IB +1.0 for the weighted GPA. Its example courses give an unweighted GPA of 3.63 and a weighted GPA of 4.13. It counts A+ as 4.0, though some schools use 4.3.

How many classes can I miss and still keep 75% attendance?

Enter Classes attended, Classes held and Required attendance % in the Attendance Calculator. It uses two simple rules:

  • Below the target: classes to attend in a row = (target × held − attended) ÷ (1 − target), rounded up. At 75%, that is 3 × held − 4 × attended.
  • At or above the target: classes you can miss = attended ÷ target − held, rounded down. At 75%, that is 4 × attended ÷ 3 − held.

Worked examples at 75%:

  • 42 of 60 (70.00%): attend the next 12 classes in a row. 54 of 72 is exactly 75%.
  • 50 of 60 (83.33%): you can miss 6. 50 of 66 is 75.76%, while a seventh absence makes it 50 of 67, or 74.63%.
  • 45 of 60 (exactly 75%): you can miss 0, because the next absence drops you below.
  • 30 of 50 (60%): attend the next 30 in a row to reach 60 of 80.

Many Indian colleges require 75%, and some allow condonation down to 65%. With 40 of 60 and a 65% requirement, you can miss 1 more class. Run the calculator separately for each subject if your college counts attendance per subject.

What score do I need on the final exam?

The Grade Calculator takes each category's Weight % and Score %, leaves out anything ungraded, and re-weights the rest. In its example, homework (20%) at 92, quizzes (20%) at 85 and the midterm (25%) at 78 give a current grade of 84.46%, a B on the 90/80/70/60 scale.

Enter Final exam weight % and Grade you want %, and the tool solves needed score = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With a 35% final and a target of 85%, you need 86.00%. A target of 90% would need 100.29%, which the tool flags as not reachable on the final alone.

Common mistakes

  • Using ×9.5 for a university CGPA. It is CBSE's school-board factor. Universities usually publish their own rule; use Custom to apply it.
  • Averaging SGPAs without credits when your university weights them, or the other way round.
  • Entering values out of range. CGPA must be 0 to 10 and percentage 0 to 100, or the tool asks you to correct it.
  • Typing decimals or impossible counts in attendance. Classes must be whole numbers, and attended can't exceed held.
  • Forgetting the "in a row" assumption. The attendance figures assume every upcoming class is attended (or missed) consecutively.
  • Mixing grading scales. Pick the grade your university actually uses; if its points differ from the UGC scale, choose the closest grade or adjust credits.

Quick answers

What is 8.6 CGPA in percentage?

By the CBSE rule (CGPA × 9.5), 8.6 CGPA is 81.70%. By the VTU formula ((CGPA − 0.75) × 10), it is 78.50%. Use the formula your board or university publishes.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage for CBSE?

Multiply the CGPA by 9.5. For example, 9.1 × 9.5 = 86.45%. CBSE describes this as an indicative conversion.

How many classes can I miss at 75% attendance?

Divide the classes you've attended by 0.75 and subtract the classes held, then round down. With 50 attended out of 60 held, you can miss 6 classes and stay at or above 75%.

How is SGPA calculated?

Multiply each subject's grade points by its credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits. Grades of A+ (4 credits), A (3 credits) and O (2 credits) on the 10-point scale give an SGPA of 8.89.
